THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES USED IN PHYSIOTHERAPY PART 1

Therapeutic modalities (machines) refer to electrical modalities and non-electrical devices that physiotherapists used for treatment of patients with musculoskeletal, neurological and arthritis conditions e.t.c.

There are different variety of therapeutic modalities used in physiotherapy for therapeutic purpose in Electrotherapy and Exercise therapy.

THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES USED IN ELECTROTHERAPY

The following are the indications i.e conditions in which physiotherapist can apply one of the electrotherapy therapeutic modalities on the patient's body for therapeutic purpose and contraindications i.e conditions in which physiotherapist cannot apply electrotherapy therapeutic modality on the patient's body.

GENERAL INDICATIONS OF ELECTROTHERAPY MODALITIES

  • Strains and sprains
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Calcific tendinopathy of shoulder
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
  • Medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow)
  • Capsule lesions
  • Bursitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Lower back pain
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Lumber spondylosis
  • Neck pain
  • Tenosynovitis
  • Joint stiffness
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic rheumatoid arthritis
  • Contusions
  • Paralysis
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Post traumatic injury
  • Neuralgia
  • Joint contractures
  • Scar tissue
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Myofascial trigger points
  • Fibrositis
  • Acute and chronic pain
  • Peripheral edema
  • Parkinson disease
  • Ankylosing spondylosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Gout
  • Paget's disease
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Muscle spasm e.t.c.
GENERAL CONTRAINDICATIONS OF ELECTROTHERAPY MODALITIES
  • Venous thrombosis
  • Over pregnant uterus
  • Over malignant tissue
  • Haemorrhagic Areas
  • Over ischaemic tissues
  • Excessive oedema
  • Over metallic implants on the body
  • Impaired thermal sensation
  • Acute pacemakers
  • Acute infection
  • Hypersensitivity to heat
  • Over male gonads
  • Over the eyes, heart and brain
  • Recent radiotherapy
  • Acute inflammation
  • Over open wound or burn on the skin
  • Over nerve plexuses
  • Over the body reproductive organs or abdominal organs
All the above first part are the musculoskeletal, joints, capsules, ligaments, tendons, bursa and neurological problems or diseases of the human body that physiotherapist can apply one of the electrotherapy modalities to treat the patient depending on the disease or condition a patient is having and the second part are the conditions where electrotherapy modality cannot be apply for the therapeutic purpose.

The following below are the pictures of some of the different electrotherapy modalities with their names.

LASER MODALITY

ULTRASOUND MODALITY

INFRARED RADIATION (IRR) LAMPS

ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION (UVR) LAMP

TENS MODALITY

SHOCK WAVE MODALITY

SHORT WAVE DIATHERMY (SWD) MODALITY

HYDROCOLLATOR MODALITY

CONTRAST BATH MODALITY

All of these above pictures, are some of the modalities used in electrotherapy with their names.
