AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION IN PHYSIOTHERAPY

 


I am going to talk about areas of specialization in physiotherapy, that is specialties of physiotherapy and the reason why I am going to talk about this, is for physiotherapy students in different universities or colleges pursuing their Bachelor of Physiotherapy Degree (BPTH). Who have interest to pursue their study for Master degree in Physiotherapy (MPT), in order to become specialized physiotherapist in one of the specialties of physiotherapy after he or she finishes his or her "Bachelor degree of physiotherapy", and also for those who have interest to study physiotherapy in university or college in order for them to know about areas of specialization in physiotherapy. 

But first of all I will like to give my suggestion or advice to the physiotherapy students, who are currently pursuing their study of bachelor degree of physiotherapy in different universities in the world. who have interest to pursue their study for master degree in physiotherapy. that you should not make your decision to choose any area of specialization just by having interest with the name of the area of specialty, except if you know that you are able to study the specialty field, and have interest and much understanding about the area of specialization, that you are going to choose because if not, you will end of having so much challenges and difficulties in the study of the specialty area, you choose and you may finish without being expert in the field, you make your specialization. so before you choose make sure you have much understanding and interest in the specialty area.

There are 8 major areas of specialization in physiotherapy 

the following are the areas of specialization in physiotherapy with brief explanation of each specialty area.

(1) Neurology in physiotherapy: is the specialty area of physiotherapy on how to become expert in making diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders and diseases.
these neurological disorders or diseases are diseases or disorders affecting the brain and spinal cord such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, paralysis, spinal cord injury, sclerosis, perkinson's disease, head injury, foot drop e.t.c.

A physiotherapist who specialized in neuro-physiotherapy will have experience and will become expert on how to assess, diagnose and treat patient with any of the above neurological conditions.

(2) Cardiopulmonary: is the specialty area of physiotherapy that deal with specialization on how to become expert in making assessment, diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases such as chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD), emphysema, congestive heart failure e.t.c by using physical techniques involving using manual techniques to clean the infected or affected airways and mucus from person's chest and sometimes by using noninvasive ventilation machine to help person to breath.
A physiotherapist who study cardiopulmonary is well experienced and expert in making assessment, diagnosis and treatment for the patients  suffering from the above cardiopulmonary diseases by using physical techniques.

(3) Sports in physiotherapy: is the specialty area in physiotherapy dealing with diagnosis, treatment, management of sport injuries like tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, hamstring strain, sciatica e.t.c.

A physiotherapist who specialized in sport in physiotherapy will be expert in assessing, diagnosis, making treatment and management of sport injuries like the above examples that sportsmen used to get during sports or athletic activities like football, volleyball, cricket e.t.c.

(4) Pediatric in physiotherapy: is the area of specialization in physiotherapy on how to become expert in helping children to maintain and achieve their optimal and normal physical development of their body for the prevention of any physical abnormality or deformity to their body such as genu valgum and genu varum abnormalities or valgus and varus deformities of the legs e.t.c.

(5) Geriatric in physiotherapy: is the specialization area in physiotherapy on how to become expert in helping old people who are in their stage of aging to help them in reducing the risk of having illnesses that are more likely to affect old people during aging and giving them treatment and preventive measures against joint problems, balance disorder, brain stroke e.t.c.

(6) Women's health in physiotherapy (Gynecology): this is the specialization area in physiotherapy that deal with study of women's health on how to make assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of disorders or diseases affecting pelvic floor and pelvic cavity of women and reproductive disorders and diseases including antenatal and postnatal care education.

(7) Orthopedics in physiotherapy: this area of specialization is dealing with study of therapeutic treatment of injuries or disorders of skeletal system associated with skeletal muscles, joints and ligaments including pre and post rehabilitation of shoulder, elbow, knee and hip joint.
Orthopedic physiotherapist specialized in diagnosis and treatment of all the above conditions.

(8) Oncology: this specialty area of physiotherapy is dealing with study of how to make assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management and rehabilitation of patients suffering from cancer problems.

The above are 8 major areas of specialization in physiotherapy which I briefly explained each specialty area and I also put short video for you to watch.
